What do art directors start with in a project?
Do they start with the drawing, colors, or images?

For bigger jobs, you start with gathering info:
- Who's the client?
- What do they want to highlight (product, service, event...etc.)?
- What's the client's voice? are they serious/formal? fun and goofy? (sometimes this is even separated by channel: social media vs tv vs email and so on)
- Who are the competitors and how do they treat their campaigns?
You take all this info and you add to it what style/colors/graphics/fonts you think work best and you add it to a mood board, which can be physical or digital. Then you can use all that info to flush out different concepts and ideas.
OR for small jobs/clients I'm used to or comfortable with I just start drafting concepts and take it from there.
Hope that helps!
