Lakeisha’s Answer

Hey Thomas,

Some ways to impress your employer is always be eager to learn, know your boss, own your job and always have a positive attitude .Being eager to learn demonstrates ambition and not being complacent. It's common to lose enthusiasm after a couple months/years of doing the same job so being eager to learn keep you intrigued.

It's hard to impress your boss if you don't really know him/her. Start paying attention to their behaviors, preferences and their reactions to different scenarios. You're looking to see what they like/dislike what impress them or what's expected. One example, if you notice your boss respond positively to a co-worker who stood up to a challenge or went above and beyond in their performance, you gain a better sense of what he/she values.

Regardless if you're working your career or not, you should always give 100% in the work you're doing. Passion is hard to bypass especially when you love what you're doing so take responsibility to be as knowledgeable about your job as you can and think critically about ways to improve. Lastly, never underestimate what a smile and a good, positive attitude can bring upon you so always stay and be positive.

June Veara Duke’s Answer

I believe one of the best ways to impress an employer is to be a self-motivated learner who constantly seeks out opportunities to advance your professional career in your field as well as new fields within your company. Taking the initiative to find new leaning opportunities such as continuing education credits, course taking, and additional training and/or mentorships is definitely the way to let your employer know that you are prepared to do what it takes to remain prepared, educated, and relevant within your company. By staying open to new opportunities of advancement and learning, you are sure to show your employer that you are serious about your job within your company and they will be sure to notice you when advancement opportunities become available.

June Veara Duke recommends the following next steps:

Research educational learning opportunities.
Seek out additional training and/or certifications relevant to your professional career.
Provide validated research articles that could improve quality of service at your company.
Offer to be a mentor for new employees.
Suggest starting a new work group class to address quality improvement within your company.
