Aaron’s Answer

This is a great question and I'm so glad to hear about your interest in sustainability. I am sharing some thinking below that I use to structure the market for sustainability as a career.

(High Level) Structure for Sustainability Opportunities:
1 - Academia - Very important research and thinking to help frame and re-enforce the systemic nature of the challenge for humans. MIT has a good website to think about this: https://sustainability.mit.edu/
2 - Environmental & Sustainability Consulting: Sustainability expertise is sometimes limited within commercial companies and consultancies are a good place to work with like minded people and experts in the field.
3 - Sustainability Offices within Corporations/Companies: Many large organizations have sustainability offices that are responsible for both the reporting and the sustainability strategies for the companies. This is another good place to learn.
4 - Climate & Sustainability Technology Companies: There are many venture-backed companies looking to make a difference in the area of sustainability, from hard-tech like energy generation/storage to tech platforms like carbon accounting tools.

Regardless of where you focus you will be part of the change and impact we need to reach out global sustainability goals!

Climate change is a huge, complex problem that will require perspectives and solutions from almost every industry.

My advice would be to start with your unique interests and abilities and explore how you can put them to work in the global response to climate change. The options and opportunities are endless, and the world needs people who can look at and understand the problem from all different angles. So, pick one and go for it!

There are so many different jobs that are involved in stopping climate change. Traditionally, I think of different research/science positions; however, I know there are also many other jobs that focus on increasing sustainability or implementing positive environmental initiatives at different companies. You can think of positions in government where you help change policy or advocate for change. You could also work at different corporations that have established environmental goals and be part of their sustainability teams. You could be an environmental consultant to help enact change at the different companies. In short, there are a ton of ways you could have a hand in stopping climate change!
