Hi David,
As you're doing a research for a class and I don't want to give you a false information. It depends on a lot of things to know the average work hours in a day for someone working as software engineer. If you have to come with a number, the range can be wide from 8 - 16 hours based on your experience on a task and the deadline to release it. You cannot say that you will only work 8 hours a day and requesting to delay the project.
Good luck on your research!!!

Typically, my days are usually 8 to 9 hours, but this can vary tremendously, depending on my projects and deliverables. I tend to have a very flexible work schedule, as it is outcome based, not necessarily hours in seat.

It depends on the team and commitments you are working on.
Usually my work time is 6-8 hrs as a programmer.
When I lead any team or driving some project it may increase to cover other work also , that time it would be 8-9 hrs ..
Some companies support more work life balance , there you could see always < 8 hrs work should be committed / loaded
Thanks

In my experience, work days for a programmer fall into two categories - normal days and crunch time. On normal days, I worked 8 to 9 hours. However, as we approach deadlines the team ends up putting in extra time to make the deadline - usually 10 to 12 hours, sometimes longer. This usually doesn't last for more than 2 to 3 weeks.
I agree with Tony - once your team sets the schedule for the project , it is a commitment. If necessary, the team is expected to work longer days to meet the project dates.
