Where can a marine biologist find good work?

After you have your education, how do you go about choosing an organization to work for and applying?

Thank you comment icon It is better to have an internship in an organization where you can learn the ups and downs of being a marine biologist. Start from the lowest position so in the future you can understand what are the common problems so that you can find a better solution. Mary Jean Avilla

Laird’s Answer

Some of the most recognizable opportunities in the field are with companies such as Sea World (which I believe is still a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch). There are also numerous jobs with universities and research groups.

Kathy’s Answer

Identify organizations that would utilize marine biologist. Also consider the federal government. There are agencies and sub agencies that are dedicated to working with marine life. Examples are National Oceanographic and Atmospheric agency, and under Dept of Interior, fish and wildlife bureau. If you’re interested in research they are research entities, such as US Department Agriculture which does research on fish. Make sure in your résumé that you include all technical scientific procedures that you’ve learned in school, and any scientific equipment that you used. You need to show prospective employers not only your degree but what technical processes you have actually done. I would also encourage you to get an internship if you’re still in school because that gives you some on the job experience. Good luck to you and your job search.
