Are there any recommended colleges I should go to if I want to be an artist?

Preferably colleges in the Mountain region of the United States, but any suggestions are very helpful and appreciated. #art #artist

Hi Eris

Actually, this is something you could research yourself. I would start by talking to your current art teacher(s) and Guidance counselor. They can give the most up to date online resources to research your question.

You might want to narrow down what kind of art you want to study, and if an art school or a college with an art department is best for you. Are you interested in the fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpting, and so on), or are you more interested in becoming a graphic designer? Maybe you are thinking along the lines of computer generated art, and may want to work more with technology? There is also fashion design, interior design, product design, industrial design and other design fields to consider. Then there is the field of art education, where I studied, and I loved my career as an art teacher. I wasn't sure what kind of an art career I wanted, but I knew I loved art, and I loved telling adults and children about art and seeing them express themselves through art.

Or, you might not really know, and just want a school that has a general approach to art, and you'll decide later where you want to specialize. This would mean that a college or university, where you could major in art, might be better than an art school. These are things to think about as you look at art schools and at colleges and universities that offer majors in art.

Best wishes on your educational search.

I agree with Ken!

Lots of artists, myself included, get their start at community college taking basic to advanced courses in multiple areas. I know I chose Bellevue College because it was close to home and it has a wide range of art courses I could choose from. They also have an interior design program which I wanted to check out and took a couple courses of as well.

I started by simply visiting college sites and looking through the course catalog for any of interest then looking for reviews on the school itself. If you know what you want to narrow the "art" interest down to, look specifically for programs that will help you become part of that field. for instance, if you want to be an interior designer, take a look for schools that have a good design program like the Art Institute or WSU. If you haven't narrowed down your exact field, I would recommend looking into a community or smaller college with options from different areas to try out and see what you like best. Once you take a few courses, you will be able to narrow down your target and talk with your career counselor about furthering your education. They will be able to help you by suggesting programs and schools after you tell them a little bit about yourself and looking over what you have done at your current school.

I hope this helps a bit! Best of luck!

Hi Eris,

You have some pretty good advice already I see. To add on, you can also google 'best undergraduate art schools'. This will give you links to various lists. Here are a couple:
https://www.niche.com/colleges/rankings/best-colleges-for-art/
https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-fine-arts-schools

Once you find a school you may be interested contact the admissions office, log onto their website or speak to your school counselor to find out if it is a good match for you and what the requirements are.

Best of luck to you!
