i would be interested in becoming a painter.
What are some tools of the trade I should be familiar with?
What steps would you recommend I take to prepare to enter this field?
Do you expect hiring for this job in the region to increase, decrease, or stay the same over the next few years?

Hi Delano!
I am not a professional painter but I have found my way into painting in my free time doing some commission work as well. I found it important to explore the medium as the first step. What kind of paint do you want to be using? Liquid/Thick? Water based/acrylic/oil based? One of the other important steps I see all successful painters undergo is to find a specific mood/expression to transmit with their work. In general you could think about the why (conceptualization) of your art. Then once you have explored different concepts you're going to find your specific style/concept. I'd stick to that one concept and carry it through multiple pieces making it a collection of paintings. When your environment will start recognizing your concept/style, it will make your art stand out. To commercialize I'd suggest taking photos of your art and sharing those with the world. In addition to that you can get in touch with the local artist community, which might help you getting your first art shows in galleries. This is a way to sell and familiarize the audience with your work.
Find techniques and media that fit the message you want to send out with your art
Deepen your technical skills
Conceptualize your work
Explore different ways you can express that concept
Find a unique style/ way of expressing yourself

Hi Delano,
I'm not a professional painter but wanted to get you an answer on a couple of your questions:
What are some tools of the trade I should be familiar with? -Paint brushes, rollers, paint roller extension, tape, drop cloths, ladder, sprayer, and sandpaper
What steps would you recommend I take to prepare to enter this field? -Paint the ceilings/rooms in your home to get some practice and see if you enjoy it. Watch some youtube videos and talk to the people where you buy your paint.
Do you expect hiring for this job in the region to increase, decrease, or stay the same over the next few years? There will always be demand for painters. Word of mouth is very important so do your best work on every gig.
Best!
