Hello, De'Aja !
I am happy to know that you are interested in the exciting career of screen writing. I hope that my advice for you on how to go about this will be helpful.
A degree in Film would be very helpful. In film school, you will receive a specialized and technical education. It will be important for you to be familiar with the way film is produced, have a sense of what acting is about, and the market for scripts. You will learn the history and how to analyze film. Going to college or film school will be a great benefit as you will have a wonderful network of people who may help you along the way as well as have the exposure to all aspects of film.
I'll admit, I do not live in Detroit, however, that is okay because I did discover that there are 6 Top Film Schools in your area. MPI, Film Connection, Wayne State University Dept. of Communication, Specs Howard School of Media Arts, Henry Ford College, and College for Creative Studies. In my opinion, the best top school for Film is The American Film Institute which is located in Hollywood, CA.
It's so good that you have some to choose from. Make an in-person vist to each one and ask a lot of questions, than compare and decide which one will best suit your career path. If you already have been writing scripts, or when you are in Film School and when you graduate, you would be happy to know that The Writer magazine (at writermag.com) has notices for all forms of written works.
Another magazine - (Screenwritingmagazine.com) has news, classes and interviews that you may find interesting. Scriptmag.com has free resources that may help you before, during and after Film School. There is a group called Detroit Filmmakers Collective . They have a Facebook page and they may be of some interest to you as well. You can view their page at https://www.facebook.com/DetroitFilmmakers/.
It's marvelous to think that you will be among the next generation of screenwriters. My last piece of advice is, through all of college and career, stay close to your values and never give up ! Best wishes on your education !

De'Aja, you didn't mention whether you want to write for film or TV. A lot of successful TV writers are now coming out of playwriting programs instead of film schools, so that's something you might consider. I've pasted a link to a good article below. Of course, you'd also need to be interested in theater. If not, then I agree with Michelle's answer.
