Ananth’s Answer

Hi Genevieve J,

Some of the good minors that go well with HR are Psychology, philosophy, sociology, social work, communications and business administration. HR managers requires great deal of understanding how human think, operate and feel, combined with empathy, altruism and effective communication skills.

Business administration minor would be more advisable than Accounting to understand the commercial operations and different business entities in general.

All the best,
Ananth

Layne’s Answer

Great question! An HR professional can be even more impactful and be a more valued partner if they have knowledge of the business. Coursework in finance and accounting would be helpful for understanding important metrics and terms used in business. Even if you don't minor in a business or financial related area, you can always take coursework that will help you get a good foundation in areas of business outside of HR.

Layne recommends the following next steps:

Take coursework in a business-related field, such as finance

Derek’s Answer

In addition to the excellent advice already here, do keep in mind continuous learning. Know yourself. Know your job/function. And as you grow, the ability to understand and influence the business matrix around you becomes more important (Dir/VP/C Suite). I personally think broader business administration generates a strong return as the more advanced HR responsibilities (organizational effectiveness) require a strong grasp on how the business system interacts. You'll do great.

Kristi’s Answer

Depending on your interests, psychology can offer exciting opportunities in areas like organizational design or performance coaching. Alternatively, finance or business administration can provide a more HR operational focus, adding further depth to your skillset.

Natalie’s Answer

Something related to business and/or finance would be a great pairing with HR. As a HR professional, I can say it is really important to have some decent understanding of how organizations make money and how they operate, as this give you so much more credibility and will open more doors to leadership positions (where this understanding is more required). It is often hard to figure out how to learn this after school or to find the time, so I definitely suggest taking advantage of degrees in school to help you build this knowledge. Business administration, finance and accounting, etc. are all great.

Jessica’s Answer

Hi Genevieve,
You can go about this in two ways:
1. Pick a minor you are interested in regardless if it pairs or links to a career - minors are where you can have fun! I've seen music, art, dance, film as minors because they are a passion/interest of the student.
2. The minor can be a good marriage with the major and your career goals. I think Business Administration would be a good minor, although that's a lot of cover within a minor. Communications or Psychology pair nicely with HR as well. Or you can think about skills you'd like to add that could be beneficial like a tech or data focused minor.
I hope this helps, good luck!
Jessica
Thank you comment icon Wise words. I am really interested in accounting, but you're right that the other minors would improve my people skills. Thank you! Genevieve

Business Administration is a versatile skill that's applicable across all aspects of Human Resources. I concur with the shared views that if your choice isn't limited to business administration or accounting, then communication and psychology are also worth considering. These skills are crucial for this career path because you'll be collaborating with people every day. Enhancing your abilities in these areas will be immensely advantageous.
