Absolutely! Restaurant Chefs, Personal Chef, Pastry Chef are all viable careers in which you can make a good living. Although, when you are starting out, chef positions typically don't have a great work life balance. I'd get started by working in a kitchen at a upscale restaurant. Finding a good mentor that can share the pros and cons of working as a chef will be of great value.

Hi Diego,
You can make a great living as a chef. Like any job or career at the beginning you will need to work hard to gain experience. You many want to go to a culinary school, and or get a business management degree.
Also don't feel that you have to work in restaurant to be chef. There are many jobs for a Chef.
You can be a food stylist for media, corporate chef at a company dining location, mainly business hours, R&D for food manufactures, or a private chef.
Start at a local restaurant get a feel for the lifestyle if you love it, do some research on schools and type of jobs chef do.
Good Luck

Diego,
The answer is yes. To be a chef, you must first work as a cook and develop the basic skills needed to not only cook but to also learn how to manage others. This comes with time and experience, and as others have said, pay in the beginning probably not going to be as much as you wanted. Once your resume grows, your experience and knowledge will sell yourself to move up in the kitchen ranks (where the pay increases as well). Just remember, being a chef means that you're doing more work than you did as a cook and the expectations are higher. As for the money issue, pick the jobs that most interest you so that while you are learning, you are also developing those skills that make you more marketable.

Hi Diego,
Absolutely! It is a very difficult field because of the physical demands and low pay starting out. You will be mainly working nights and weekends as a chef which may be fine starting out but if you plan to get married and have children, you may not be around much.
Best!

Hello Deago, thank you for your question. Yes, you can make a great living as a chef. I would suggest that once you achieve the status of chef you may want to start thinking about opening your own restaurant, so you may want to be thinking about getting your degree in Business Management. Best of luck
