Time management is very important so you can meet deadlines. This is a everyday thing whereas a cook you need to be ready for service and have all of your prep ready to start as well as a plan to prep for the next day. This also depends on where you work and if your items are affecting other staff finishing their dishes as well. Also, basic culinary skills (knife, cooking, understanding recipes) are the foundation to being successful.

Your knife skills and the work habits are the most important skill to have starting out. As a cook/ chef you use a knife all day long so it is the most important to start out getting to work on time not calling out listening the the chef and following his orders . After that math skills are very important for converting recipes and production. As you move up in the the kitchen you taste will become more important.
