Always go along to the Vet when your own pet needs care. Get to know the doctor and ask if they will allow you to spend a morning, afternoon or day observing the technicians and doctors as they work. You should also ask all of your neighbors and friends to go along when they take their pets for a visit and ask their doctor for the same tour and exposure. With enough exposure, you open yourself up to a possible part-time job.
And yes, helping out at the local animal shelter is also a good idea.
Are there any horse or animal sanctuaries in your area that would welcome your help?
There should be some dog training clubs in your area that may allow you to observe classes and likely interact with the dogs. If you own a dog, consider attending a class yourself which should help the club approve of you observing other classes.

Seeking volunteer positions at local veterinary hospitals or animal shelters can be very helpful to get initial experience and exposure within the veterinary community. My first step towards my career as a veterinarian was a middle school volunteer project at a local animal hospital. Eventually, this can lead to a position as a veterinary assistant or technician to be able to work along side veterinarians and help them with their day to day tasks. This will give you a better understanding of the demand and requirements of the job. The more time you spend in a veterinary clinic or other veterinary settings allows you to talk to veterinarians about their jobs and determine if this career is something that you would want to pursue.
