What undergrad major should I major in if I have an interest in the veterinary field?

Should I be pursuing something science related, biology or chemistry?

Hi! Honestly, you can major in anything you want as long as you complete the pre requisites for your schools of interest. Naturally, a major in biology would be ideal in terms of preparation for veterinary school. I personally did a Biomedical Sciences major. I also have a friend who majored in Microbiology and she has emphasized how much her major prepared her for vet school.

i would say anything science. Biology is a perfect subject when thinking of becoming a vet.most people i know who works in that field, usually are biology majors. Everything is mechanical and include some kind of math. Math subjects can play a critical role for that field. Best of luck.

Hey Kelly! I would look into the admission requirements requested at any university offering veterinary programs but, I do believe you would need a science major as an undergrad, particularly biology or chemistry. These courses help you create a strong foundation in medical terminology and how bodies function at a biological level.

Hi Kelly,
The best way to approach is to talk to the admissions office of the colleges or universities that you are interested in applying to. Most of them will say take a science major to get into graduate school for veterinary degree. I have come across a student that took Animal Science for their major BA degree and I also know someone who is currently taking Biology and is then thinking of graduate school. Something that I found was that there are two veterinary graduate schools in California (Pomona and UC Davis). There could be more but I only came across two.
