I recommend creating art and donating it to local charity auctions. Be sure to supply them with lots of cards with your contact info and link to your website where you can sell your art. Set up shows locally. Coffee shops are a great place for a first time artist show. Again, have lots of cards available. Join a local artists guild. Get your name and your art out there! But don’t quit your day job! You have to build up your name and hone your craft. It’s hard work, but you can do it!

Hi Trinity! First, I think it's vital to set expectations initially before setting out for a career in the arts. Out of the starting gate, your salary will be very low, if anything. To give yourself time to establish yourself in the arts community and avoid financial anxiety from the beginning, it might make sense to supplement your dedication as an artist with a job that provides some consistent income -- perhaps in a related area. For example, an aspiring visual artist might consider working in a gallery. For me, as a musician, I worked selling audio equipment while pursuing my artistic passion. The key is to keep your costs low and flexibility/openness high. Many artists tend to end up taking a rather circuitous road, and that's ok.
Contact other artists in your area of specicialization who are farther along in their journey so you can seek out potential mentoring and learn about the road they took.
