How do you get into mainstream type acting?

I have no idea how you are supposed to audition or find out about auditions.

Daryl’s Answer

The earlier you start, the more knowledge you receive. Volunteer for community theater to help with props, costumes, sets and that will introduce you to some people who are in the know.

Daryl’s Answer

The above answer covers most of what I would say. I started in Community Theater, then took MANY classes in acting, produced my own film that won many awards and am non union. Classes are the best thing and many acting companies have scholarships to help with cost.

Daryl recommends the following next steps:

Acting classes through school, community theaters, going to plays to atch acting in action

This is a great question. I've had the most luck Googling local theater groups and visiting their websites or sending them emails about upcoming shows. A lot of places have "open auditions" which means anyone can give it a try. If you're in school, check if there's a theater department and get to know the director, maybe you can start with a school play!

If you're interested in film or commercial acting, the best place to go is Backstage. This is a site with a ton of information about upcoming casting calls, and I'd recommend looking at student films as a starting point. I think you can browse the site and get weekly emails for free!

I am not a professional actor, but this type of exploration can get your foot in the door. Be sure to organize any acting experience you get onto a resume, and take a professional-looking headshot. Most directors will ask for these, but all the information on what you need to prepare for the audition should be on the casting call.

I've acted in student films, independent films, and theater productions, so if you have any follow up questions feel free to ask!
