Hi John,
See my responses below:
- What is your past research in computer science about? Ransomware
- Suggestions on what should I do before taking computer science. Do something that interests you. However, some of the top topics in comp sci include Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning, Big Data, Bioinformatics / Medical Technology, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Internet of Things, Quantum Computing, Robotics and Virtual Reality.
- What kind of research should I focus on in computer science? Focus of a topic that interests you. The more you're interested in it, the better you will do.
Good luck.
Wayne.

Hi John,
I can tell you that your question is a very good one. I am myself someone who ended up taking Computer Science even if I was not fully sure I understood what that meant at the time and pivot my career after graduating in a way where I could still use my skills.
To address your questions directly:
- What is your past research in computer science about? Geolocation for my Bachelor as well Project Management and Web Analytics and Marketing for my Masters
- Suggestions on what should I do before taking computer science. Truly understand how broad computer science is and can be. It literally spans from low-level code, Assembly, networking, and cybersecurity to Front End and Interactive programming, all the way to AI, ML and video games development. At the time, I didn't understand any of that and went in blindly, not realizing that I was going to study extremely abstract concepts for 3-4 years, when I was expecting to do things that were more visual. So my advice is to start digging into what are some curricula and paths within Computer Science and see which one would be more of interest to you based on your passions
- What kind of research should I focus on in computer science? Once you find an area of Computer Science that you are more passionate about, try to understand what a typical curriculum looks like, what course you would be taking and what are jobs people who took that course ended up getting into.
Learn about the variety of areas of Computer Science and see which one sparks your interest
Once you have found your area of interest, learn more about what courses are offered in those areas and what the expected objectives are for those programs
After that, it would be a good idea to try to see what jobs people who took those programs ended up getting to get a sense of what opportunities you would get

It's important that you understand that Computer Science is a very broad area. I would recommend that you read up about the sub fields within Computer Science. It might help you understand if you want to keep your focus at college broad and only specialise after a couple of years of study or when you start your career. Or alternatively it might help you understand if there is a specific area that interests you and you may want to be more focused in your areas of study from the beginning.
