Hi Lily!

There are a lot of different ways you could mix an interest in healthcare and business, depending on which you want to focus on more. Healthcare Executives are usually business professionals that obtain a Masters degree in Business Administration or in Healthcare Administration. The usual career progression is heading up a department for a hospital or being the practice administrator for a clinic before advancing to Chief Operating Officer and potentially Chief Executive Officer. Alternatively, you could pursue a medical degree and serve as the Chief Medical Officer for a hospital or other healthcare service.

Additionally, in the past decade there have been several new types of organizations developed to address practice management for healthcare organizations. Accountable Care Organizations are one such example. These organizations generally attract professionals who understand the business of healthcare in addition to healthcare service delivery.

In short, there are a lot of options, but it generally depends on the balance you wish to strike between medicine and business. Lastly, private practice is a common choice for doctors who also wish to operate their own business.

I hope this helps.

Pharmaceutical sales and marketing is a possible option that offers remote work and independence usually outside of an office setting. The US has a strong pharmaceutical industry and there are many positions in sales and marketing advertised on company websites. Hiring managers are always looking for energetic self-starters that can work in an independent environment. Research human and animal health companies and attend job fairs to begin your network. Another great way to met prospective company contacts is to attend industry trade shows. Best of success in your search!
