I would pick up this book "Automate the Boring Stuff with Python". It will give you a good insight as to whether or not you will enjoy being a programmer. It is free and pretty enjoyable read. Best of luck !

Krithiga’s Answer

Software engineering is a profession that's less regulated than medicine or law. If you have the skills and any good 4 year college degree, you can interview and join a software company.

(1) Try programming - do you like coding .. start with an easy programming language as Python.
(2) Try solving some real world problems - do some projects (like building apps, Alexa skills) that you can demo to people around you.

If you enjoy the above, then this might be the one for you :).

Krithiga recommends the following next steps:

Try Python Programming
Build an iOS App or Alexa Skill

Naghma’s Answer

Software engineering is a vast domain. You can have a plethora of career path within Software industry. So I would suggest you to be more specific with what you need. Now the question is, how would you know what types of career options are there? For that, I would recommend you to learn about what careers the industry has to offer. A simple google search will tell you so many options, Java developer, Automation tester, Cloud engineer, Data scientist, Machine learning, blockchain, so many options!!
The good thing is, you can see, learn and decide where to go. Learn about the careers first, see what interests you, are you into mobile app development, or create games, code machine learning algorithm, work on cloud, whatever it is, find what you feel interesting first. Then try to connect with seniors or people from that industry or skills to see what they did and how they did it.
There is tons of material available online and offline, you can decide on a degree course as well.
But try to first understand what you want to do. Your option may end up being different from what you decided initially. But don't fear that, just start with something that you like.

Hi Victor, What a great question! If I were you, I would join any clubs in your school that involve programming/coding etc. If a club does not exist, I would consider creating one. Attending local hackathons in your area would be a great learning experience. You could join slack channels or online forums to discuss technology in addition to self teaching and takes online classes/certifications. You might also want to do research on focused areas of business that appeal to you.

I wish you the best of luck! You're already ahead of the game with your great question!
