Hello Christina
To take advantage of a scholarship, if you are a first year, take as many classes as you could handle and earn a a good score in, This will ensure a good GPA which mean more scholarships and awards down the line. Use the chance to then take part in the college activities which will be invaluable in networking as well as discovering what career that suit you. Finally, take part in research opportunity and internship
Good luck in your endeavor, Christina

Good point. Most universities have a cap on how much they'll charge you. It's often all the same cost after 12 credits.

This may not be quite the answer you're looking for but obviously not doing too many extra electives would maximize your scholarship utilization. This is a double edged sword though. You can pack yourself with classes and as little electives as possible but then you might burn out, overexhaust yourself, and ultimately end up with bad grades...so then you saved money but...got bad grades...was it worth it? So you definitely just want to get a feel for how much you can handle per semester (how many credits, how many major vs elective classes per semester, etc).
Another thought, I had a friend who was blowing through classes and I learned from that that they would take the more annoying classes at the big university through the local community college (which is cheaper) and transfer the credit over. Lots of big universities pride themselves in have the class average in Calculus be 40% :/ So...why not just take it through the community college, get a 95%, then transfer the credit...boom...you've saved yourself stress, sleep, and will pull out ahead of others because they all decided to do that hardest class at the University.
See if there's any classes you can take during the summer online through the local community college that you can transfer to your university to save money

Hi Christina,
In order to make the most out of scholarships for college would be to apply to as many as possible. If you have a list of the scholarships and their requirements albeit an application and/or an essays, then a sample application and/or essay would come in handy. All you would have to do is apply with the same essay if the scholarship allows it. Or you could cut and paste the relevant information that the college is looking for.
