What is the best way to decide what to study?

What are ways to decide what to do for after high school? I have ideas, but I'm scared of making the wrong choice. I have aspirations for teaching english, talking about sports, and working in concrete.

I think Rebecca offers some great advice. I would add that community college is a great place to start your educational journey to help you explore your major objectives. Since you're interested in teaching English, I hold a Master's and AA in English and am a current Ph.D. student studying English. I have quite a bit of experience teaching and tutoring English at the college level so if you want more insight I can answer your questions. Remember you don't have to have it all figured out.

Thank you for the question. The most important is what you have interest. Don't be afraid! Listen to yourself.
Below is my suggestions :
1. If you are interested in English, you can consider to be Writer, Journalist, English Teacher, Translator, etc.
2. You can find out more on these careers
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seeks guidance from your mentor, career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Explore the entry criteria of the relevant subjects in the college
You can start your career on what you have interest now. Having said that, your interest may change in the future. It is not necessary to work in one single career in your life time. A lot of people may change the careers several times in their work life.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Jasiel, good day,

Try taking a career test to determine what you love doing the most or your highest interest. At the end of the trial, there might be career choice options. The other thing you can try, which helped me, is to have a family member or someone you know ask you what you are interested in. For example, when asked, you might say, I like to know why things work or what makes a doorknob turn. The right person can suggest some careers with your answer. I hope this helps.

If you plan to attend college and are unsure of what to study, I would suggest entering your freshman year with an "undeclared" major, which basically just means you're not sure what you want to study yet. And that's perfectly fine. (Most people end up changing their major at least once during their college career anyway!) Most schools do not require you to declare a major until after your sophomore year, so that gives you two years after high school to figure out what you really want to do. During those two years, I suggest that you not only take your "general education" courses (core classes that are required for all students), but also take some "elective" courses (classes you're interested in that you can choose). This will allow you to experiment with different areas of interest and then when it's time to declare your major, you can choose the subject that you're most interested in.
If you don't plan to attend college, that's fine too. Either way, I would suggest taking some online courses for those subjects that you're interested in (Google free online courses for _____). Or look up some information about those subjects on YouTube. This will help give you some free information and practice in those fields and from there, you can determine what interests you the most. Then you can either apply to colleges with that major or plan to attend a trade school.
It's all about doing your research now and following your heart based on your interests. Don't be afraid to choose the "wrong" thing. You can always change your path!
