Thank you comment icon Thank you for your questions. I am glad to hear you are interested in Tech and Business. Would you consider to work in the Business teams in Technology? E.g. Sales, Marketing, etc. Alternatively, would you consider to be an entrepreneur in Technology. Below is my suggestions : 1. Identify the colleges that offering both Tech and Business and the entry criteria 2. You can consider to take Tech as your major and Business as your minor or vice versa. It is subject to your interest 3. Explore any intern opportunities in Tech Companies 4. When you about to graduate, you can find any opportunities to work in Tech companies 5. You can decide whether you would like to start you own business after working for a while Hope this helps! Good Luck! Rebecca Tang

Camilla’s Answer

Hi Amy.
There really are so many different areas of opportunity within this field. I think the most important thing is to pursue something that will give you a broad perspective and the ability to dive into many different aspects of business management. A business degree will allow you to explore your interest in a broad setting and allow you to narrow in on your skillset. It might also be a good opportunity to combine a technical degree with a business degree like engineering + MBA, I know a lot of folks who have this background, and it is a very successful combo in the tech business and will allow you to pursue a broad range of career paths. An MBA (or any grad degree) is also a great way to obtain an internship in the industry and secure employment before graduation.
I wish you luck.

Marina’s Answer

Hello Amy,

From the tech perspective, I would focus on what area you want to go into. In tech their are a lot of Jack of all trades and master of none people. Rather than focus on everything (I.e. programmer, database, system analyst, IT, etc.), try focusing on just one thing. If you want to go into programming, try learning Python, if you want to go into analytics/database focus on learning SQL, if your more interested in IT work try volunteering for your schools IT department. And if you have no idea on the field you do want to go into, take some general IT courses at a community college or online in different areas and once you find an area you’re interested in focus your learning on that specific career path. Also I would not recommend going into the tech field if you do not like learning things, Tech is a constantly evolving field that requires constant education on different languages and programs. That constant learning environment can be stressful to some people, but others thrive on it.

Wish you success in the future,
Marina

PS: If you’re interested in business and tech try an information systems major, it is a combo of the two, you take both business AND tech classes. Which can help you narrow down on what path you want to focus on and change your major if necessary.

Marina recommends the following next steps:

Take some courses (online or college) on different tech areas: Programming, Database, Computer Engineering, Systems Analyst
Pick Career Path
Take online courses and boot camps to reach career goal
Apply for jobs in chosen career

Sarah’s Answer

Hi Amy,

Business and Tech are really large fields and contain a variety of jobs, there are so many different roles that you could peruse, both coding and non coding.

I would recommend taking classes in college that introduce you to the different areas. Usually colleges will have introduction to business class which provide an overview of different business areas such as finance, marketing, supply chain, accounting.

On the technology side, there are introduction classes for different technical skills, such as SQL, Java, Python etc. I highly recommend trying those as well to see if you like them.

I've see that even if you don't being a full time software engineer, there are fields such as business data analyst, which can be lucrative.
A lot of these careers can be high paying so it's good to find something you like and feel you can perform well in.

Best of luck!

You can even find the open position and apply.

I hope it will help you long term.
Thank you

Kevin’s Answer

Hi Amy,

Any business related field can be high-paying if you have enough experience and level of education. Most importantly, you should find what business major that suits you best. It can be finance, marketing, management, accounting, and so on. Once you have found the major that you like most or what you're good at, it is best to invest a lot in that field and eventually you will get a high paying job.

Best,
Kevin
