Hi Asa,
Teaching at any level requires passion and advanced education. So, I have a friend who teaches at Berklee College of Music and he holds a Master's of Performing Arts. At research institutions, they prefer Doctoral level degrees. However, it doesn't have to be a Ph.D., but a Doctor of Music (DMA), an advanced performing arts degree that combines academic theory with performance. You have options- just remember you have to have an advanced degree Master's or Doctorate to teach at the college level. I hope that helps. :)

Depends. Not sure about music, but in general, you need at least a graduate degree for teaching. Many small colleges/community colleges even allow 'adjunct' positions as long as you meet the Master's degree requirement.
If you wanna go all in (big school, best talented students), you need a doctoral degree (would be a PhD in most areas, but again, I am not sure about music). Being hired as a PhD usually also requires a HUGE amount of research, and less teaching.
Good luck.
