Don't overlook state and public law schools, even if they don't seem fancy or have lots of students going to work in federal courts or with big law firms. Law school is very expensive, but more money doesn't mean a better education. Good schools will have solid first year curriculum to cover the basics and internship/externship or clinical programs to give students practical experience in second and third years. Many private firms recruit from local schools, so consider where you want to live when considering a law school. If you know local criminal attorneys, search for their bios and see where they went to school.

Every year various publications print a list of the top law schools in the U.S. They range from the Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale in the East to Stanford and UCLA Berkeley in the West and the University of Chicago in the Midwest. However, there are also a number of fantastic state schools such as NYU, the University of Michigan, the University of Boston, etc. I would recommend that you take a look at the overall rankings, their criminal law programs, test score requirements, consider where you want to spend 3 years of your life, and what the alumni go on to do in the field. You should also visit the schools if you can and talk to students and alumni to get a feel for where you might feel most at home. This will give you a good starting point for figuring out the right fit. Best of luck!
