Hi Raven, Ooh, lots of room for suggestions with an open question like this.
I would say stay open, much like the above answer, this field changes, there are always new ideas and concepts coming out.
At the same time, find what brings you the most joy in this field. Do you have a particular focus you are most inspired by shooting? Passion translates in photography and people will feel that from your photos.
Be open to feedback, but know that this is a highly subjective field so just because folks tell you their opinions, it doesn't necessarily mean they are correct, take what you can from the feedback and leave the rest.
Find ways to leverage your passion and joy, don't try to smash them into a pre made box, look for new and creative ways to do more of what you love to do, if it doesn't exist, create it!

Hi Raven, I am going to assume you have a camera with interchangeable lenses. If not, that's your first step. I recommend you look at the work of professional photographers and see what the working pros are producing. This will help you decide on which genre of photography captures your interest. Since I am a reader, I tend to suggest exploring books that explain how a camera works so you can become comfortable with your gear. Maybe you can shoot for your yearbook. As you start out with your photography, I suggest you shoot what interests you and shoot a lot. Look at your images and decide which work for you and why.
Best of luck to you!

- Learn how cameras work with light, lenses and film/sensors to create the pictures you see.
- Study paintings and other photographers.
- Learn about colors, perspective and composition.
- Dedicate some time to make sure you know how your camera works, its functionalities and capabilities.
- Experiment a lot, have fun! go out there and try different focuses, light situations, positioning of the camera, shooter speeds, framing, etc. Try it all, this is the best and fastest way of learning.
Best of luck.
