what do I need to do to become a psychologist in the USA?

Hi everyone! I am looking to work towards being a psychologist in the USA. I have done my Bachelor's and Masters in Applied Psychology (from India) and currently doing my Masters in Creativity and Change Leadership. I am aware that I would need to pursue a Psy.D or Phd in order to become a psychology and apply for license in the USA. Could anyone help me with the steps/ process to becoming a psychologist here in the US?

Any guidance would be so helpful.

Megan’s Answer

You would have to get your transcript from your previous institution and find a University that had PHd of PsyD program and ask them to do a credit audit to see what credits would transfer from your previous institutions. Every University is different on what they will agree to except so check several! Then they will tell you what you have left to take to finish your degree! Good luck

Megan recommends the following next steps:

Get Transcripts
Research University’s that offer your program of choice
Compare Tuition prices
Ask for a credit audit

Hi Lakshmi.

I do not ant specifics for you, though I would advise that whatever your next steps are, they are done with the guidance of professionals who specifically work in the area of credentialing professionals coming from overseas. Your main goals would, I presume, be to eliminate redundancies and find the most efficient path that will allow you to do the type of work you would like in the U.S.

Megan's suggestions are great and should put you on the right path. Make sure to check in frequently with the credentialing offices you are working with, as regulations do tend to change.

Stay diligent and things will work out as you would like.
