Great question. It will depend where you are located. For example, as a Deputy Sheriff in a large city, we covered numerous areas of crime from vehicle accidents to burglary and homicide. In a smaller town, you may never experience large scale crime and your activities may consist of assaults, burglaries or traffic related incidents (not always though).
You will be working with your local community, your law enforcement peers, and possibly other agencies that you need to coordinate and cooperate with to solve cases. It's important that you have good communication skills and enjoy working with people since you will spend most of your time interacting with others.
Ask your local police department if you can do a ride-along to experience what a day looks like.

Great answer, I would also recommend doing a ride along. You can just show up to the police department and ask for the form.

As a police you work with all kinds of individuals, from members of the community in which you serve, to seasoned officers from other departments. You will do patrols, often times car chases, inspections, you name it. It not all glamor and glitz like in the movies, however, your job is important in protecting the American people.
Thank you, this is amazing! I really needed it.
