If my desired career path is that of a music producer or has something to do with the music industry as a whole then... ?

1) What is the best way to manage my time in high school?
2) What are some good internships I should look into in high school?
3) Who should I send my resume and cover letter to?

Thank you comment icon That is like trying to become an actor. It is very difficult. You might want to learn a skilled trade first, then while you are paying bills with that money, pursue your music producer dreams, on the side. Always keep your day job until your side hustle is making you more money. Anthony Perez

Hi Jordan, I am not in the music industry but have friends/family with various careers in the field. I know that experience has a lot to do with how you get started. An internship at a recording studio is a good way to expose yourself to the process and get hands-on training. You can research your local studios or recording labels and ask if they have any internship opportunities. Something you have to think about is that recording music can be a long process in the studio. The artist, musicians and producers can spend many hours (early & late) to get the recording right so you may want to ask about that too. The hours may not align with your school schedule, but perhaps in college or during the breaks. You should consider colleges/schools with music production and audio engineering to develop the technical skills and academic knowledge in audio research.

1) What is the best way to manage my time in high school? I would highly suggest any sort of computer science courses, also marketing and business classes. If your focus is going to be as a producer you will often have to touch every single topic listed above. As well you should try and reach out to the music producers in your local area. If you are in Utah I would suggest reaching out to the Piano Guys and asking them to connect you with their music producer. Getting time with producers and shadowing them. This could be the most valuable thing you can do with your time. Let the producers know that you want to learn this craft and are very new to the business. They will be very generous with their time and knowledge.
2) What are some good internships I should look into in high school? I would start by getting a list of the production companies and start to read their career or job postings. See what they are looking for and familiarize yourself with the lingo and tools they use on a daily basis. You may also want to follow these producers on instagram and tiktok. Any time spent in this space is time well spent.
3) Who should I send my resume and cover letter to? I would actually start with your portfolio. Work on that first. The resume will come after you have worked on some projects. Think of the project lifecycle, from conception (the idea) the tools and programs you use to build the project and finally the delivery of the end result. Remember this is a process that you will have to replicate over and over again. That is what producers have to do. Also be prepared to discuss your creative process. How you are able to generate and leverage your own creativity.
