Do colleges look at activities that are done over the summer?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that colleges mainly look at your senior year in college. Does this also include the summer before senior year? #Fall22

Hi Diksha!
In terms of extracurricular activities, colleges tend to look for the quality and length of time you were involved. For that reason, colleges will look at any extracurricular activities you include in your application, including ones over the summer or from before junior/senior year. I would recommend picking a few activities and getting really involved with them. Try to gain leadership opportunities from becoming officers/leaders in the organization, or be involved in the activity for multiple years if possible. Colleges are looking for dedication when it comes to extracurriculars, so having a few quality ones on your application tend to be better than numerous of less quality involvements.

Hi Diksha,
Yes! Activities and extracurriculars are very important when to colleges, and it is best to describe all of your involvements in depth on your applications. Extracurricular activities look different from person to person, but many colleges look for in-school involvement through sports, clubs, academic rigor beyond school requirements (i.e. community college classes or online courses) etc., service/volunteer work, work experience (i.e. internships, first jobs, caretaking), participation in community organizations, and creativity (i.e. talents, skills, entrepreneurship). Above all, showing consistency, leadership, and a willingness to challenge yourself in will get you far on college application. Every summer, including the summer before senior year, matters and you can write about your activities in an essay or list format. Since college applications are typically due in Fall-Winter, don't forget to include the activities you have done in Fall 22! Though senior year is important, colleges usually look at all 4 years of high school to get a better idea of your educational journey.

Hey Diksha, I'm assuming you mean colleges look at your senior year in high school.
Depends. For the most part, colleges look at your test scores and your GPA. Extra-curriculars, even the summer before senior year, is still experience you have and could count.
If you're writing an essay, depending on the prompt, you could talk about stuff you did before. Like "junior year of summer I was the lead cashier at a restaurant and trained new people. That's where I gained my leadership skills".
If you're submitting a resume, it's still a line item you could list.
Hope that helps.
