Hi Richard,

Are you inquiring about the profession for a glazier? If so, glaziers work with glass manufacturing and installation for residential, commercial and industrial buildings. They cut, fit and install glass panes and sections. This is a skill trade profession.

As a glazier, one utilizes ladders and scaffolding to install glass sections on new buildings. For existing buildings that have damaged glass sections, a glazier has to cut and customize the replacement glass to fit the area of concern. When working with glass, injuries and cuts can occur from the sharp edges of the glass. Other concerns is dealing with heights, falling off of ladders and scaffolding and dealing with weather conditions such as strong winds, cold, etc.

Glaziers are accustomed to handling heavy objects. They have to have great eye to hand coordination. Communication skills are needed to coordinate with fellow team members and with the client of the building where the glass installation or replacement is taking place.

To become a glazier, one will either go through a four year apprenticeship at a trade school or gain knowledge and skills on the job training. This track will allow one to learn about the trade for glass manufacturing, installation and replacement. For a higher education pathway to learn about glass, some colleges offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in architecture glass, stained glass, and ceramics courses.

Hope this information is helpful and best wishes for your future endeavors!
