Andrew’s Answer

My sister is an architectural engineer. She shared some information about her first role - she concentrated on HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) and worked with the Chrystler building in Detroit. If that role, she learned that having a comfortable work environment is critical to a company's success. If employees are complaining about "too hot", "too cold" or "too stale" environment - they are not working, but rather complaining to their supervisor or peers and nobody is getting any work done.

So she recommends taking up an interest in "networking" and "socialization" skills. You will need to talk to a lot of people to be a successful architectural engineer. Math and engineering is important - but making people feel heard is critical when it comes to creating an amazing work environment.

From my friends who studied civil engineering, this is what I learned:

To be an architectural engineer, you should have a strong interest in design, construction, and building systems. Specifically, you should have an interest (or build up your skills) in:

Building design: Architectural engineers are involved in the design of buildings and other structures, so you should have an eye for aesthetics and an understanding of design principles.

Building systems: Architectural engineers design and oversee the installation of building systems, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems, so you should have an interest in learning about these systems and how they work.

Construction: Architectural engineers also work closely with contractors and other construction professionals to ensure that buildings are constructed according to plan, so you should have an interest in learning about construction methods and materials.

Building codes and regulations: Architectural engineers need to be familiar with local, state, and national building codes and regulations, so you should have an interest in learning about these laws and how they apply to the design and construction of buildings.

Overall, being an architectural engineer requires a combination of technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. If you have a passion for design, construction, and building systems, and are willing to work hard to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, a career in architectural engineering could be a good fit for you.

I don't want to tell you what your hobbies, personality, behavior, or preferred work environment should be. That's up to you as an individual.

But for education, you should look for an accredited program so you'd eventually be able to be licensed as an architect.

Salary of course matters by region/city as you've stated. So down the road when you apply to entry level positions, be sure to research what the expected salary should be.
