Will’s Answer

Hi Joel,

Thanks for your FIRST question and welcome to the Village!

You've demonstrated, you might not notice, two of the keys to succeed in any areas.
1. Being proactive - you reached out to CV!
2. Experience needed to better any job - everyone starts with no experience!

To answer your question, here are a few things to consider
- If compensation is not critical in the short-run, volunteer to gain experience and skills in areas you are interested and make connections.
- Take online courses (lots are free and covering various subjects) to get some basic knowledge.
- Build up your portfolio as part of the gig economy by showing case your knowledge/experience gained after steps above.
- Reach out to your inner circles (family, friends) and professional network (LinkedIn) to see if there're any opportunities available.

Good luck! 🤞

Latisha’s Answer

This is a great question and an opportunity most do not take. The best way to gain experience in a career path that you are interested in is to volunteer for the job or task. Why volunteer, you may ask? Volunteering allows you to control the time that you have available and does not hold you to a requirement. It shows the company that you are willing to give your time to be educated and trained on the task or position. It gives you the experience and knowledge you need. This also allows you to get a full understanding of the job and / or company and decide if you want to further a relationship with them. I feel it is a win / win for both you and the company and allows you to build a rapport especially if in the near future you are interested in building a career or applying for a position with this company. A foot in the door before a position was available is a sure win.

Latisha recommends the following next steps:

Investigate the company: Found out the history and mission of the company prior to applying or volunteering yourself.
Investigate the job description: Is this something you really are interested in doing?
Find a mentor or someone doing the job. Ask to set up a meeting to ask questions.
Schedule the time out that you want to volunteer and How often.
Learn something, Gain some knowledge and Experience but also become an asset.

Thank you for your question. This is a very common question to many students. That's true that many jobs would look for candidates with working experience.
Below are a few suggestions :
1. Some corporates may run graduates programs and some may host information session in the college. You can keep an eye on the corporate website or the college career office.
2. Explore any intern opportunities. Similar to above, you can keep an eye on the corporate website or school career office.
3. Submit your cv to recruitment agency.
4. Look for any part time or freelance opportunities of relevant industry
5. If there is any corporate you have interest, you can send your cv with a covering email to their HR to articulate why you would like to work there
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Rose Ann’s Answer

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your question!

I always coach my employees who want to apply for a position they have no experience in to research the position and the requirements then start to build a foundation of experience and knowledge. Take a class or course in the field you are looking to get into. Mentor or shadow with someone who has the job you want to get into. Look for internships or projects in that department that you can be a part of. These things will help you get your foot in the door at the position that you really want! Good luck to you and your future endeavors!

James Constantine’s Answer

Hey there, Joel!

Finding a job without any experience can seem like a tough hill to climb, but don't worry! There are plenty of strategies you can use to boost your chances of snagging that job you've got your eye on. Here's a handy guide to help you along:

1. Show Off Your Skills and Education: You might not have direct experience, but you've got skills and education that could be just what your dream job needs. Don't forget to showcase these in your resume, cover letter, and during interviews. Remember, your ability to learn fast and adapt to new situations is a big plus!

2. Try Volunteering or Internships: By volunteering or interning, you can gain practical skills and beef up your resume. Seek out opportunities in the field you're interested in, even if they're not paid. It's a great way to gain experience and network in the industry.

3. Get Networking: Networking is a powerful tool in job hunting, especially when you're starting from scratch. Attend industry events, join professional groups, and link up with people in your field on LinkedIn. These connections can offer helpful advice, referrals, and job leads.

4. Look for Entry-Level Positions: Many companies offer entry-level positions designed for folks with little or no experience. These jobs often come with on-the-job training or mentorship programs to help you develop the skills you need.

5. Tailor Your Application: Make sure your resume and cover letter are customized for each job you apply for. Use keywords from the job posting and highlight your relevant skills and experience. This will help you stand out from the crowd and boost your chances of landing an interview.

6. Practice Makes Perfect: Even without experience, you can still ace your interviews. Research common interview questions and practice your answers. Role-play with a friend or family member to help you prepare.

7. Keep an Open Mind: Be open to different types of jobs and industries. You might discover that your skills or a unique perspective make you a strong candidate for a job you hadn't considered before.

Here are some great books that can provide more guidance:

- "The Job Search Solution: The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Next Job" by Tony Beshara
- "The 2-Hour Job Search: Using Technology to Get the Right Job Faster" by Steve Dalton
- "What Color is Your Parachute? 2019: A Practical Manual for Job Hunters and Career Changers" by Richard N. Bolles

Remember, finding a job with no experience might be tough, but it's definitely not impossible. By showcasing your skills and education, networking, and keeping an open mind, you're sure to land a job in your desired field.

May all your efforts be blessed!
James.

Volunteering is a great wait to get new experience. I also recommend being pro-active an open-minded about the opportunities - early in your career their might be many opportunities available at schools or college. Summer jobs is a great way to gain some experience as well . I began working when I was 14 and most of most of my employment was during summer as a promoter/advertiser. It allowed me to practice for interviews, present myself, and gain some experience for the resume. It was also fun and allowed me to gain some pocket money. When i was applying for my first internship, the experience as promoter helped me demonstrate that I can work hard and combine work and school.

Best of luck with finding your first employment. I know it can be scary at first, but just remember that we've all been there and have experienced similar feelings :)
