School Options for Animation (in Canada)?
What is the best pathway to becoming a 2D animator? Are online programs like Animation Mentor or worth it? Or is it better to get an actual degree from a school like Sheridan?

Canada has several excellent schools for animation, and the best pathway to becoming a 2D animator depends on your specific goals and circumstances.
If you prefer a more structured learning environment and want to earn a degree, then attending a traditional animation school like Sheridan College or Seneca College might be the best option for you. These schools offer a comprehensive curriculum that covers the fundamentals of 2D animation, including character design, storyboarding, and animation techniques.
If you are looking for a more flexible option, online programs like Animation Mentor can be a good choice. These programs offer a self-paced learning experience and allow you to learn from experienced animators from around the world. However, it's important to note that online programs may not provide the same level of networking opportunities and industry connections as traditional animation schools.
It's also worth considering a combination of both traditional and online learning. For example, you could attend a traditional animation school for a degree program, and supplement your education with online courses or workshops to further develop your skills.

Hi Thomas! My recommendation to learn 2D animation is to go through online schooling I know Animation Mentor in particular has excellent classes on animation. While animation mentor offers mostly 3D courses it also has 2 2D animation workshops and 2 storyboarding courses I believe you would find very helpful! A couple of additional recommendations I would make is to make work on your drawing skills as much as possible before going into 2D. Also, do some research on the 12 principles of Animation and get familiar with the school's 2D animation software, while schools do teach you these things I've always found having some previous knowledge of animation has allowed me to ask teachers more informed questions and allowed me to improve faster.

As someone who has attended both art schools and Animation Mentor, I can honestly say that online animation schools are better for animation than universities.
Animation Mentor was created to be more hands on with the students and teach things that other schools just didn't teach. AMs mentors are animators in the industry so they know their stuff and share it willingly. I recommend Animation Mentor 100%.
