Mack’s Answer

Hello Madeline,

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® is a non-profit organization that has certification programs for accreditation in the sonography field. They state: "Many education paths are available for prospective sonographers, but the most common is a 2-year degree through an accredited sonography training program. Bachelor’s degrees are also available, as are 1-year certificate programs in sonography for persons already trained in another healthcare field." You might check their website for more information
https://www.ardms.org/how-to-become-a-sonographer/

Greenville Tech (in Greenville, SC) might be the closest school with a program in sonography. A call to them to ask question might be a good start: (864) 250-8290. York Tech here in Rock Hill has a Health and Human Services Division ((803) 327-8024) that might give you some ideas, too. They do not seem to have a sonography program, but they might have some courses to get you started. York Tech also has a program with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that allows York Tech students to transfer credit to MUSC for further degree studies.

Sonography and ultrasonics is an important technical expertise for medical care. Good luck.

Typically you can obtain an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, it's a 2 year degree. I would suggest getting as many of your general education requirements out of the way first. This way you can concentrate on your core classes. Depending what type of student you are, it might be 2 1/2 years of school. Sonographer
Sonography-it's not just for babies, although that is what I do.

According to https://www.healthcaregraduate.com/ultrasound-technician-schools-in-sc you'd need a a 2-year associate's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree from an accredited school, followed by certification from a recognized certifying body. That means pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exams.

https://www.scrqsa.org/page/RADPROGR has a complete list of recognized schools.
