Where do you start if you want to be an ultrasound tech?
I'm curious when it comes to college what major or classes you would have to take to become an ultrasound tech.

I started out in the Radiologic Technology program (2 years) and graduated with an AS degree in Radiologic Technology. I worked in this field for 5 years, and then became an ultrasound tech. Some classes you could consider toward getting your degree would be the “basics”—English, Psychology, Medical Terminology, Math, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology. A basic nursing class may also be helpful, such as patient care.

Hello Madison,
The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® is a non-profit organization that has certification programs for accreditation in the sonography field. They state: "Many education paths are available for prospective sonographers, but the most common is a 2-year degree through an accredited sonography training program. Bachelor’s degrees are also available, as are 1-year certificate programs in sonography for persons already trained in another healthcare field." You might check their website for more information

Greenville Tech (in Greenville, SC) might be the closest school with a program in sonography. A call to them to ask question might be a good start: (864) 250-8290. York Tech here in Rock Hill has a Health and Human Services Division ((803) 327-8024) that might give you some ideas, too. They do not seem to have a sonography program, but they might have some courses to get you started. York Tech also has a program with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that allows York Tech students to transfer credit to MUSC for further degree studies.
Sonography and ultrasonics is an important technical expertise for medical care. Good luck.
