Aaron’s Answer

Hello,
There are a number of jobs in sports, from team Physician, to Athletic Trainer, Exercise Physiologist, Coaching and Scouting. You can also, follow a career in sports administration such as team General Manager, Athletic Director, Sports Marketing, or become a sports agent. Jobs are available at the high school, college, and professional levels. Many of these jobs will require a college degree, and many colleges have a program in sports management, and coaching. If you want to go into sports medicine they have programs for this and if becoming a doctor is what you wish then you would need to attend medical school. I would suggest searching to see what schools offer a sports curriculum, and reach out to those schools.

Good luck to you.

Gabrielle’s Answer

Hi Malik!

There are so many opportunities to work with sports teams outside of being n a player. Sports teams operate just like most businesses and corporations and need employees to work in different departments like Community Relations, Events, Game Day Operations, Media, etc. Personally, I started working with the Oakland Raiders right out of college in Community Relations/Events. I was able to work game days, set up events and fundraisers in the community, work with kids in schools to develop team skills and physical fitness.

Although I didn't stay in the sports industry, I developed so many skills that helped me transfer to my role working in technology. One thing you learn, is that the NFL/NBA/MLB will stop for no one (except covid!) and the bar of excellence is set high. I was taught how to present myself professionally and hold myself and team to the highest standards of detail orientation.

Most teams have programs for interns and students young in their career to begin building their experience. I would reccomend starting in one of these positions while you are in college, working part time. Although you may lose your weekends to sports, it's a great way to build meaningful and long lasting professional relationships. Working in the sports industry you will find a lot of competition, so the sooner you can begin your career (even part time and young) the better set up you will be.

Wishing you the best in your journey!

You can also reach out to your teams of interest and see if they have opportunities available. When it comes to a certain type of industry, it is important to build your network of people because they will help you get your foot in the door.

I echo what Aaron says with regards to the variety of jobs available within sports. Once you have an idea of which path you would like to go down (medical, admin, etc) I recommend getting involved. At the collegiate level we are ALWAYS looking for interns. Once you begin your college studies I suggest reaching out to individuals in the athletic department so you can gain an understanding of what the environment looks like and that can help further guide you into your desired field of work. Sports medicine, sports nutrition, and strength and conditioning often have student volunteer/internships available as do the marketing department, media, and other front office departments.
