I am not an expert at all in this but I would say, go and google your question. You can find anything on internet nowadays. You will surely find tutorials, people who will tell about their experiences, etc. Go on Instagram, find models and see what they do, what they post, for which brand they work, who comment on them, etc.
If you are just starting thinking about it, start thinking what kind of model you want to be, find a photographer and start a portfolio. See if you can find some tutorials on line for each step. Social media will probably be your best friend.
How hard is it? Everything can be seen as hard. I am a translator and people will tell me that there are millions of translators and it's hard to become one. They are millions of photographers and it's hard to become one. Same for models. However, if you follow what you want to do and to be, you'll find ways to be successful. Maybe first, it will be a side hobby, then a side job, before being a full job. Put your energy on it and it will work.

Yes, a career in modeling is difficult due to its competitive nature and because it is based on physical appearance. It is not impossible, however.
I would suggest modeling training. Find a school in your area. You will need to know how to move, pose, work with photographers and be willing to travel or relocate. I will refer you to some modeling agencies at the end of this answer. Most are in Charlotte. Modeling does not require any special degree, but I would suggest technical training. You'll soon learn what agents are looking for.
Model agents work on and hire models for projects that have specifics. This includes the types of models they use. This is why it's hard - they are not always looking for your type. You'll need to put together a portfolio of several of your different looks. Different fashions, different hair styles. This will show that you have a wide and versatile range. Your look is everything. Being photogenic gets you half way there, too.
Keep aware of your local news media for any model casting notices. Sign up on line at employment websites and use "model" for notifications for jobs. Sign up at model agencies when you feel you are ready.
Now for the difficult part - New York City and Los Angeles are the hubs for jobs in modeling. Once you get experience and a portfolio, you may want to consider relocating. If modeling would be a hobby or sideline, you could probably stay in your hometown.
Never pay a modeling agency to be a model. Real agencies get paid from their project clients, not the models. One expense could be photo shoots, however.
Each person has a different experience in the pusuit of a modeling career. Since it is very competitive, it seems like a long shot. Keep in mind, that unless you personally know a model agent, it may be a while until you build up the skills and tools to start getting work.
Best wishes to you and have fun !
