Can art be used to design things for aerospace science? Like creating rockets and designing and making them work?

Students in my area start using 3D design software as early as Middle School. They start out by creating 3D objects on their computers, then use those models to make 2D drawings. These drawings and included notes add and refine details that are relevant to the manufacturing of the part. At some point, the students will create both 3D assemblies and 2D drawings of those assemblies. It looks like you will enjoy doing this. Many high schools have not only manual fabrication machines, but also Computer Numerical Control machines. 3D printers are also very common in high schools.

That's a good question Kyle, and one that needs a little focus as to scope of what you want to accomplish. You see, computer assisted design, or CAD, is used extensively for the design of aerospace components. Some of the designs start out as sketches, or drawing on a piece of paper and later into 3D space to be tweaked or enhanced. In fact, a persons design skills can be used anywhere and on anything. And know with inexpensive 3D printers in the home, you can try a design at home modeling it in a free cad application that you can download from the internet. Many companies use 3D printing to make prototypes that they can test the operation or the fit of the part before they actually have the part sent out to be manufactured.
If you can give me a clearer idea of something you would like to design for, I would be happy to give more attention.

Here's another idea for Kyle. I don't work in aerospace, but for sure they make custom software used by people (as opposed to software the runs insides the planes, rockets, engines, guidance systems, etc.) that require a "User Interface" (UI). That's how the screen "looks and feels" to the person using it. Closely related to UI is "UX" which means "User Experience". It goes deeper than UI design, into how the software functions to create an experience for the user. That is all considered "Design" in the context computer systems. You don't have to be a software code programmer to do it, although you would want to use the software tools to create the UI/ UX and develop understanding of the code that actually produces the UI/ UX, such as HTML, CSS and Javascript. I hope this helps.

Hi Kyle,
You don't need to know how to draw like an artist to become an engineer, but it may require doing some engineer drawings. Computer aided design tool using a lot in engineer. It is relevant to the engineering question you asked.
