Hi Kaitlyn, thanks for reaching out!

I hope I understand your question correctly, but I get from it that you want to pursue a career in Photography, but not sure what to study at the University.

I'm not a professional photographer, but instead a serious hobbyist including being a Photoshop addict. I hope to switch to professional photography when I retire.

Photography requires both technical (example: understanding relation between ISO, aperture, shutter speed) and artistic skills. Depending upon what type of person you are, you may find one easier than the other. It is worth noting that many technical people are quick to pick up the art of photography. So if you like technology, don't be shy to major in it.

However you might be able to major in photography at the university. Another option, which is quite common, is graphic design.

Does this help? Let me know if I am not understanding your question.

Hi, photography pays well, and many people are professional photographers. But income can be unstable month-to-month. As you grow up, some expenses will be mandatory, like rent or mortgage, food, transportation etc. So you must either really love the industry that you're choosing (that's what I'd recommend in any case), or be psychologically prepared to some level of financial uncertainty.

Somewhere I've read that the best career is an intersection of what you enjoy, what you can do well, and what pays well enough for you to maintain your desired lifestyle.

David’s Answer

Hello Kaitlyn,
I have been a professional photographer for over 50 years and photography has been extremely satisfying for me. Only you can say whether it will be satisfying for you. I will tell you, any career in the arts requires a great deal of passion and determination for whatever artistic genre you pursue.
I recommend going to college and getting a degree that will allow you to make money as you establish yourself as a photographer.
There is a great deal of information about photography on the internet and in books. I suggest you learn how to operate a camera and explore the various genres of photography.
Best of luck.
