Hi Emma - some basic qualities to have to become a nurse is to have compassion for others, be selfless and the burning desire to help the ones in need. You need to have a strong stomach and not afraid of the sight of blood which is associated with this profession.
From a studies perspective there are several levels of nurse, LPN (License Practical Nurse). RN (Registered Nurse). For many aspiring nurses, becoming a registered nurse is a good entry point into the career. Than there is NP (Nurse Practitioner), although both registered nurses and nurse practitioners focus on patient observation and care, the largest difference between the two roles is that NPs are permitted to prescribe treatments, order tests, and diagnose patients—duties normally performed by physicians—whereas RNs are not.
To become a nurse you will be required to undergo studies anywhere between 2 up 6 years or more depending on the track you choose as a nurse.
Best of luck!

Hi Emma,
Some traits it takes to be successful as a nurse include compassion and empathy for others, the ability to work well with a team, the ability to work under pressure, to handle stress, have strong attention to detail, and have a strong stomach. Nursing is one of the major professions where you have to leave your outside problems at the door. Your main priority on the floors is your patients.
Nurses have a lot of stamina, work long hours on their feet, and do some pretty heavy lifting. You'll learn the "hard skills" in school (pharmacology, dosing and administration mathematics, running an IV and venipuncture), but the aforementioned are very necessary soft skills to make it!
Depending on where you want to ultimately go with your profession, you can start at a 2 year school to become an RN, continue education to become a BSN, and even go onto becoming an NP.
There are a ton of areas to specialize in! Once you're in school you'll find your niche.
Leadership, nursing education, and diversity and inclusion are becoming really big areas of interest on the administrative side of this profession.

Hi Emma, key qualities for a nurse include empathy, effective communication and listening skills, teamwork, and being able to prioritize and manage time well. Nurses must be licensed in the state where they practice. Nursing schools and the types of programs available in California can be found on the website of the Board of Registered Nursing. Here is the link: https://www.rn.ca.gov/careers/steps.shtml.
A helpful way to prepare to become a nurse is to take college prep courses in high school, such as math, English, and science. You can talk to your school counselor about which courses you need to enroll in. When you graduate from high school, you can decide whether to enroll in a nursing program and earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). It will take roughly 2 to 3 years to complete. In addition to an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree can also be earned in nursing. It'll take about four years to complete.
