Vamshee’s Answer

College is important for many reasons, main reason i did college was to earn good money for better living with stable and long career.
My father was an elementary school teacher, and his job didn't pay well enough to raise the four kids and pay them for their college.
I still remember that my dad told me when I was in 11th grade that, by studying well and doing college one can able to make good living and good career, else one has to work hard for living doing regular jobs.
So that inspired me to work hard and get into engineering, fortunately i became an engineer and glad that it brought me good career and financial stability.

Many reasons why college is important:
- Create job security
- Develop skills
- Earn higher income
-Broaden your perspective
- Prepare for the future
- Build New Relationships
- Achieve Personal Goals
-Make a difference
-Better health outcomes
-Peruse your hobbies and other passions

Bottomline, It's surely worth to attend college.

Wish you all good luck in your future endeavors!!

Michel’s Answer

This is a good question I never planned on going to school. I went into the military when I was 17 years old, and I knew for a fact that is what I wanted to do with my life. I was going to be in the military for a career then do some small work once I was done. I ended up liking the first couple years, but I wanted more responsibility than I had. I wanted to be in charge of something, but everywhere I looked in the military someone was someones boss. If I was in charge of a squad I would be yelled at by the platoon sgt. If I was the platoon sgt I would then be yelled at by my company sgt. I really disliked this and I wanted some sort of autonomy. I ended up asking to go to college to become a nurse while I was in the military. I was told you are not smart enough and you will fail. So I just gave up after that for a while. I ended up messing up my back pretty good overseas in Afghanistan. I came back and asked to go to school so I could work in a job that would allow me to not destroy my back more. I was denied it because I wouldn’t pass so I made the decision to leave the military because my back wasn’t cutting it anymore. I ended up going to community college and wanting to become a nurse. I realized I didn’t have the back to be a nurse and to rotate patients so I chose to pursue medicine as a first generation college student. I was told by multiple people that I couldn’t do it even had a sister tell me I was irresponsible because I was just wasting my time. Well I kept pushing and fell in love with school and science. I realized the more and more I learned in Biology the less and less that I knew because it kept opening up more and more doors. I kept pushing and I kept learning and finally I took the chance and applied for medical school. I ended up getting into a dream school of mine and here I am learning medicine.

I didn’t want to go to college, but my circumstances put it into my head. I realized I didn’t want to be a worker bee I wanted some autonomy. I realized I didn’t want to always be told what to do, and I wanted to do a little bit of the telling. I wanted to work with a team where there are certain bosses, but everyone can act in the best interest of the patient. That is what medicine is. Someone is sick and all of the people working with that patient have an expertise in some aspect of their care. No one person is going to be able to treat that patient perfectly, but when you bring all of the members together you can help save lives and make a difference and this is what I wanted in life.

That being said college is not for everyone some people do really well and some people hate it. You have to find what you like and what works for you. If you are not currently interested in school that is okay. Find your path and find your happiness for some people that is college for others, that is trade work, and for others that is working a job that is just 9-5 that requires no thinking. No one will know what they want until they explore the world.

Erin’s Answer

I initially went to college to put myself in a better position to get a job, what I have learned is college is so much more than that. It really turns you into a person you weren't before. I like to say college made me be able to handle the boring stuff. There is a lot of busy work when it comes to college assignments and I feel like that is for a reason. It builds a lot of character and makes you a more professional person overall. We live in a world today where you don't have to have a college degree to be successful but I feel like it was necessary for my growth. I recently graduated with my masters degree in Business Admin and I did it because I wanted to not because I had to or it was necessary for a job I wanted. I had a goal that I wanted to reach and I wanted to be an example to my daughter that if you want something you go for it and you don't finish until its done and make a new goal after.

Craig’s Answer

James has a very important point. Getting a Bachelor's degree can allow you to get hired for positions where there is a requirement for a degree. You may have many qualifications through experience (more so than other applicants) but without meeting a degree requirement you are out of luck.

From a general perspective a bachelor's degree is a good signifier on your resume that you have good all-around education. It will open doors for you. It's the pursuit of post-graduate degrees (Master's and Ph.D) that you have to think carefully about. Getting those will open some doors, but close many others.

There is a lot of conversation about alternatives to going to college, how college is not for everyone. And I agree! If you are in high school then talk to career counselors about different types of training programs. Read about professional societies in industries you find interesting. The internet is great for digging up information.

I would defend going to college and getting a bachelor's degree. A four-year degree (especially if you can live on campus) will expose you to a degree of formal education that you will make use of for the rest of your life. I've been out of college a while, and I still refer back to that base of knowledge. It will set you apart from those who don't have a bachelor's.

Craig recommends the following next steps:

Research career tracks.
Pick a college that aligns with those career tracks.

James’s Answer

College is starting to become less important for the education aspect. It's more of a prerequisite. I want a degree because I am in the Military, and I need a bachelors if I want to commission as an officer. If I want to get out and do a job in federal law enforcement, I will need this degree as well.
