I love the answers people have given for this question. As Maggie has stated, using your clothing as patterns and fabric is a great way to learn construction. Great construction will often separate you from the rest.
To get started working in fashion industry is difficult however I have faith you can do it.
School or classes help to close the gaps on garment construction, fashion history and sketching. You have to be able to visualize your designs.
Build your portfolio, this part is also crucial. Depending on which market you want to work in, high fashion or mass market will determine the pieces you have in your portfolio. Mass market rely on technical skills like computer skills. And knowing the customer.
Network like crazy; LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok etc. Showcase your work and talk about it. Building relationships with models, makeup artists and photographers can be mutually beneficial when everyone is starting out and you need portfolio pieces.
The cons are the long hours, some toxic people and the countless rejections you will undoubtedly face. Every great designer has been faced countless rejections but don't that stop you.
Fashion is crazy, chaotic and enlightening. Have fun :)

Pros are obvious. Cons are that it’s a difficult industry to break into on the glam side of things.
Recommendations are to be honest with yourself as you go if it’s a good choice (aka will you succeed at design, or would being in the industry as a support role be a better fit). Also to start drawing /designing and making your own pieces now. Having a portfolio makes a big difference with art school/employment…etc.

Hi Avery, to get started in the Fashion Industry you need to just START somewhere. Start with what you already have. Start styling different outfits for yourself and for others. If you're feeling more creative, start revamping and cutting up your old clothes and turning them into new items and designs. A great way to start making designs is to take clothes you already have and lay them down onto some fabric or older clothes and cut around them to make a new pattern to create something new. This is a great way to practice your cutting skills, understanding how to sew the clothes back together, and it will help you save money on buying new fabric that you may not be comfortable cutting on as a new designer. You can also watch tutorials on Youtube, Tik Tok, and look up some sewing websites online that you can subscribe to for a small fee.
this was really helpful, thank you !

Start by making things!
Grab existing items you have and transform them, lightly, heavily, no matter. Make them unique and your own and show your friends. See what they think about them.
Follow other fashion designers that you like, young ones! Because they will be going through your same struggle. The business changes so rapidly, that you have to find people in your current range. Go to flea markets, tons of people creating new things and selling them. Draw inspiration from them, take photos, chat with them, aske them about their journey, etc.
Then create some form of page to showcase the things you're doing and get feedback. Is IG what kids use these days? :p
