Paul V.’s Answer

Traditionally, lawyers studied Political Science or Economics before law school. Nowadays however, law schools are seeking candidates with more diverse backgrounds. In other words, Computer Science, Engineering and Education backgrounds could assist new lawyers in distinguishing themselves from all the other lawyers around.
Thank you comment icon Hi, Paul! I've always been curious about this as well. I just had a few questions about college majors. 1.) What major did you choose in college, and why? 2.) You mentioned that law schools are looking for diverse backgrounds. With so many options nowadays, do you have any tips or next steps a student can take who is trying to decide on just one? Thanks so much! Alexandra, Admin
Thank you comment icon Hi, I hold an Associate's Degree in Mass Communications, a Bachelor's in English Education and a Master's in Applied Linguistics. I was a professional international educator for a number of years before I decided to attend law school where I earned my Juris Doctor. Try to get volunteer experience in some areas you think you may want to study. It's one way to discover what you do NOT want to be or do. Paul V. Suppicich, Esq.

Elizabeth’s Answer

Hi, in my experience, law schools are open to people with unique majors, not just traditional ones like political science or a strict pre-law track - in fact, sometimes the more unique majors can help you stand out. I majored in English Literature and minored in Speech Communications and Theater when I attended a midwestern state school - and I ended up attending Northwestern Law School. Both my writing and my speech/theater background really helped during law school and in practicing law after school (and even help me today in my Human Resources career)! Don't feel restricted - focus on your passions and enjoy your college experience!
