How do I know what part of filmmaking is best for me?

What's the deal with filmmaking? I know I'm interested in being some part of the process, but what are the requirements and types of work for different roles?

Hi James,
This is a very good question. I have always said, making a film is like building a village, there is a job that fits your interest and skills. I started shooting photography and film when I was a child and once I realized I wanted to be in the film biz, I thought for sure I wanted to be a cinematographer, but my path took me into production and eventually directing. Getting a job as a production assistant can give you access to the various jobs on a set and eventually you will identify what interests you most. Most departments have entry level assistant jobs too, so once you get hired onto a show or a production company, you will find a path that fits you. There are many, many types of work on a show from pre-production, production to post-production, just take a look at the credit lists for TV and film. The 1st step is to network with people in the business in your area and get on a show or hired at a production company and go from there. Good Luck!

Hi James,

the best way to figure this out is by interning or becoming a production assistant. Through those experiences you will get to see what you like and don't like and then gear your career towards the area of work you do like and network while on those sets for those opportunities.
