Baljit’s Answer

Volunteering with those with disabilities could come in the form of volunteering at the local hospitals. You could ask administration for any pointers regarding volunteering. There are many departments in the hospitals that have those individuals with disabilities.

There also could be opportunities in volunteering at schools. There is usually a special needs section of some schools where you could volunteer in. You would need to check in with the front desk admin again. It may also be an opportunity for you to volunteer at the school that you attended as a young student.

The library could also have a volunteer program that could cater to those with disabilities and learning issues. There are many events that most library run in the community too that are specific to those with special needs.

Lastly community (such as thought the city that you live in) events and functions may also have what you are looking for.

Tami’s Answer

Becoming a personal care attendant for an individual with a disability is the greatest experience and very rewarding. Special Olympics is another great way to volunteer especially if you enjoy sports. I currently volunteer for an event for young ladies with disabilities. It is a "pageant" that girls participant in and learn leaderships skills along the way. It is called Miss Amazing. Remember that individuals with disabilities are "people first" who enjoy doing the same things anyone else does, they just need to little support to achieve it.

Kimberly’s Answer

Besides the above mentioned, schools, libraries, and Special Olympics :0) You might also want to try the local Y's or PAL programs if there are any in your area. There are other community based organizations that may have programs, like the ELKS, Knight of Columbus or Rotary Clubs.

Also depending on your area, there are support, resource and/or advocacy groups for just about every type of disability. You can do an internet search by zip code and _______ (if there is something in particular you are interested in, ie Autism.) You might also want to check your state resources / departments. If you lived in NJ, there is book put out by the Division of Disability Services called NJ Resources.

Just found and wanted to add - There is an app "Be My Eyes" where you can volunteer and assist people with visual difficulties.

You may want to try with some of the community gardens in your area (many of which support people with disabilities, e.g., via raised garden beds). Some folks with disabilities may want to garden but need some help with planting and weeding.
