Thanks for the question. To be a design engineer/mechanical design engineer, in general, you need to have a minimum degree of B.S. (M.S. helps in many cases). The most sought after skills for a mechanical design engineer are: CAD (Computer-Aided Design), DFM (Design for Manufacturing), GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), FEA (Finite Element Analysis), FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), DOE (Design of Experiments), CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), SPC (Statistical Process Control). You can use college courses/online courses and gain experience/expertise in all these skills.
Specifically for Lockheed Martin, I would advise you to look into their products and understand how they function. Next, it would be great to connect with engineers of the company via professional networks towards understanding what the specific nuances of the job role are. If you are in college, then it is advised to do internships in the same technical domain so that you get practical industry experience and use that to effectively communicate your strengths as opportunities of job interview arises.

You have some other great answers. Besides having the right major there are other things you can do. Go to the college that Lockheed recruits from. They usually focus on top universities. Study hard and apply yourself. They also want top students. Apply to every opening that you find with them both through your recruiting center and on line. While in school, that means Coop and/or Internships. When you graduate, any job that lists less then 5 years of experience. Prepare for the interview. Learn about the company, the values, their interview style, and read the job description. Prepare for the interview. Practice interviewing.
Find out what schools Lockheed recruits from, and apply there.
Study hard and learn the fundamentals.
Apply to every opening that you may remotely qualify for
