Hi Gillian
Its great to know you are putting in a lot of thought on applying to colleges. Its the first step in the right direction.
Regarding your question about what to write so that you can stand out in the essay - here are a few pointers.
1. Understand the scholarship essay questions. Its important to know the focus of the essay (is it academic excellence, or community service or sports accomplishments)
2. Develop a story line of events and milestones in your life that can have influenced or contributed to your journey from childhood to the current point in time
3. Identify those milestones or events that are unique to you or your background (for instance, did you have to overcome some difficulty or hurdle to complete your school education. As an example, Immigrant children may relate a particularly difficult social adjustment during the initial years to overcome during the school years). these could be emotional, family related, financial but the key is to highlight something that you personally had to overcome to complete school.
4. Talk about your passion for the scholarship topic through key experiences. For instance - if community service is a focus area, ensure you can highlight 3 examples of community service (volunteering etc) that indicates your passion in that area.
4. Identify at least 2 reviewers of your essay. These should be people that you trust and who can provide objective comments on the essay (school counselor, teacher, family member etc). Based on their comments, be prepared to defend and revise the essay as needed.
5. Spell check is very important as is grammar. Please ensure to review for any spelling mistakes and/or grammatical mistakes.
