Penn foster is a great online program throughout the country that is great to achieve your degree as a vet assistant. I would also recommend working in a veterinary setting like an shelter or a spay and neuter clinic.

Hi Evelyn -

This is a great question, there's a lot of confusing / conflicting messages when it comes to school rankings. If you're looking to become a vet, my recommendation would be to look at a school that has a clinic where you'll get real life experience verses just an education. The three best programs with actual clinics are Colorado State University, Michigan State University, and University of California - Davis location. I've found that finding a job is much easier when you can speak to having real life experience. If you'd really want to determine what it'll take to be a vet assistant, stop by your local vet to ask what they did and where they went. This may even open the window for potentially shadowing someone at their clinic to see if that's what you'd really like to do.

Assistant or Tech? There is a difference. Anyone who works at a vet is a Vet Assistant. A Tech is a registered nurse essentially. The assistant programs aren’t necessary to work in vet med. unless state laws say otherwise. A tech requires schooling to become registered again depending on state. Most clinics will do on the job training for an assistant. I wouldn’t waste money on a program for a vet assistant. It’s better for you to just get a job at a vet clinic and learn hands on.
