This is a very tricky question. The architecture industry can have major ups and downs, leading to some years being fantastic for finding a job, and others being downright impossible. Currently, the market is so hot, it's very difficult to find candidates because of all the competition from other employers. The one thing I have found is that the people that do well regardless of the economy are the ones that are passionate, hard working, capable in all aspects of the profession, and if not capable, open to learning how to be. Knowing multiple computer programs is a great advantage, as well as having some experience coming out of school. There are a lot of opportunities in D/FW for summer internships which should always be taken advantage of. And if nothing else, know that the knowledge you gain can always be used outside of an architecture firm. IE Rendering, drafting, construction, graphic design, set design, etc. You just have to be open to a-typical opportunities. Oh, and have an AMAZING portfolio...this is the first thing you are judged on!

Alexis recommends the following next steps:

Visit your local AIA website to see what job opportunities currently exist, and the requested experience. I think you will see a pattern of what is needed, which may help you focus during school on what courses to take and how the market is doing. http://aiafw.org/chapter-services/job-board/

A degree in Architecture allows you to pursue different careers. Sometimes the first job requires to be flexible and is not always your dream job, but each professional experience brings knowledge and great addition to your portfolio. Make the most of every opportunity, build a diverse background, do the best you can in each role and these experiences will pay off at the end.
