Hi Cailin!

A few really important skills come to mind that this type of job could help you with:

1) Interpersonal/people skills - you will get the chance to interact with people at different levels/job roles and this lets you learn more about what others do, as well as dynamics in the workplace.

2) Organizational - many of these jobs will include a component of you helping to keep the office or others organized. This is a great way to understand the different ways or reasons this happens based on the type of work being done. This also can set you up for success in other jobs.

3) Adhering to a schedule - whether it's your own schedule or helping others be prepared and ready for their own schedule, this is a great way to understand how to get work done in the time allotted. This helps for budgeting time for projects, as well as setting realistic deadlines for yourself.

Hope this helps!

Hi Cailin!
As mentioned by Clif above, an office administration job can be a great way to get your foot in the door at a company in a field for which you're interested. I actually started my career as an Office Manager at an architecture firm because I wasn't sure what career path to follow with my Visual Art degree. In my case, the experience in this role helped me determine what I didn't want to be. But instead it led me to other opportunities that ultimately landed me where I am today in wireless engineering.

In addition to the benefit of witnessing the inner workings of an industry or role that you're interested in, it also helps you grow some of your own softer skills that are important to long-term career growth. For instance, the office admin generally is the go-to person in the office for any needs and planning efforts. By being such an integral piece to the mechanics of the office, you would learn how to deal with different personalities, hone your communication style to fit your audience, and plan events or outings. In some cases, you also learn basic finance management. The role is integral to any office and is a great position for starting a career.

I think that is a great "first role" particularly if you are still in school, or are unsure of what you want to do for a career. In my company, I know several people that began their career in an administrative role, and then found a career path that interested them. It is much easier to get promoted once you have your "foot in the door" of company and have a great reputation.
