Bryan’s Answer

Are you planning to go into academia? Others have described ways to identify the "top schools." But if you're planning to learn how to solve problems and demonstrate that you can do hard things, then it doesn't really matter. As a hiring manager, I was more interested in the fact that the candidate had a degree (demonstrating that they could do the "hard thing") and then we talked through their problem solving skills.

You can look up plenty of lists on the internet that will slice and dice schools a million ways to tell you which one is the "best". What's most important? Prestige of the school, job placement, value? Increasingly, hiring is less about what school you went to (if any) and more about your fit for the job.

I got my first job in software before I had a degree. I got my current job as a software engineer at Google without a degree in computers, my BS is in chemical engineering.

In my experience, college is more about "learning to learn", and problem solving in general. Any job you get is going to require learning a ton of domain specific knowledge to be effective.

matthew recommends the following next steps:

Get an internship
Contribute to an open source project
Use online tutorials to build a personal project

Hi Joshua,

Its a tough question to answer , in my honest opinion it all depends on your personal interest in the topics you want to go deep , for e.g Machine Learning or . Computer Science is more about self learning than spoon feeding , and if you study in top ranked ones you will surely get jobs in bigger companies much easier than if you do your studies in other lower ranked ones .

You can surely google to find the list of companies that hires from certain schools . If you wish to work for those IT Giants you can study there.

Hope this helps
Jerin

Leon’s Answer

The answer to your question is not a simple one. See the Internet link below for details.

https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/computer-engineer/

Remember going directly to a four year private University with tuition room and board can cost $200,000.

Personally, I went to a two year community college and received a degree in Math and Science. I made sure the credits were transferable if I received an A or B. Then I transferred to Syracuse University in the Management Informations System (MIS) program where I learned computer engineering, accounting, finance, law, transportation, business management, etc. Upon graduation was able to apply computer engineering into the business world.

Since then I continue to study computer programming, hardware, etc. on the Internet. There are many free websites that will teach you coding and hardware essential.

Leon recommends the following next steps:

Read the attached Internet website
Learn a programming language. The top three used in businesses is Java, Python, and C#

Daniel’s Answer

Right the short list is like CMU, MIT, CalTech, Stanford, etc.

But don't sweat it if you can't get into or can't afford a really really top school (I certainly couldn't when I applied). It's gonna be a lot more about how you buckle down and focus yourself, it's just a lot easier to do that if you're surrounded by students doing the same.
